Bowel Cancer Awareness

Written by Neil on .

Every year June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and as this month comes to a close we thought we’d remind you about what you can do too!

This really hits close to home for many of us, including myself. Recently a close friend of mine was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 33. Thankfully his diagnosis was quick, the necessary treatment was then initiated and now he is in full remission 4 months later.

Tragically, bowel cancer claims the lives of around 100 Australians every week.

However, the good news is that, if found early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. This is why screening is so important! If you are experiencing any unusual or ongoing symptoms, or are concerned about changes that may be happening to your body speak to your GP to discuss your risk. We all know that this is never an easy topic to discuss, but early action can be life-saving.

If you or one of your loved ones is aged 50 or over, you are considered to be at a higher risk of bowel cancer. Those between the ages of 50 and 74 should receive a free home testing kit from the Government.

Alternatively, we stock the ColoVantage Bowel Screening test kits in the pharmacy, for any age to test at any time of the year! These are simple, convenient kits that you can use at home. The test is clean and easy and helps to detect traces of blood that may be present in your stool, which may be released as a result of the presence of colorectal diseases.

Speak to one of our Pharmacists in store, or click on one of the links below, to find out more about this simple test!
